Underwater Digital Photography/Videography and the Social Media Revolution

As everyone by now knows we live in a hyper-connected world. We Share, Like, Tweet, and Friend all day long over our favorite social media channels. It is a way to stay connected and communicate with the people we know and love. It is also a great way for everyone to meet new people with common passions. I think as scuba divers, we will accept a friend request from a fellow diver just because he or she dives. It’s something we all share—plunging into the deep blue sea—and that is good enough for me to accept their friend request. And now that we are all friends and we visit socially over the Internet, what happens next?

The answer is to SHARE our EXPERIENCES, tell the tales of our adventures and the places we go. Let’s be honest, we invest a lot of time and money into our sport of scuba diving and getting some response to our adventures feels good. We love when family and friends comment and like our videos and photos on social media. This is how we communicate in this social media revolution. Over 1.5 million pieces of content is shared on Facebook daily. It is a fundamental shift in the way we interact and share.

This brings me to underwater digital photography/videography. Digital cameras, video, underwater housings, and strobes are the tools for us to express ourselves. We all can become photojournalists for the underwater world by diving, shooting stills and video and then sharing on social media. Scuba diving is a diverse sport, and I believe if a puddle was big enough, someone would don their gear and go for a dive. Digital photography/videography is the eyepiece to those adventures! The best news is this equipment is getting to be more sophisticated and less expensive everyday. It is not difficult to afford a great set-up of camera/housing/strobe combo that will take great stills and even HD video. Go ahead and check out some great combo packages available thru Divers Direct like Olympus and Sea & Sea.  If you are truly passionate about our underwater world there really is no excuse to arm yourself with this equipment and document that passion. Get geared up, go diving, and SHARE those experiences. ONE NATION, UNDERWATER
